Behavior
Firemouth Cichlids are medium sized, attractive, fish that require a minimum aquarium of 55 gallons long, ample swimming room, sparse to dense vegetation, plenty of hiding places, roots, driftwood, rocks or slate, caves, fine sand or small, smooth, pea sized gravel. These fish, like all Cichlids, are not recommended for a community aquarium. These Cichlids are easy to care for and are perfect for the beginner Cichlid keeper. Firemouths may live in peace with other Cichlids; however, like many Cichlids, when they pair off, they may become quite aggressive and territorial. These fish shows their aggressiveness by flaring their gills and extending their throat sacs. Most Cichlids like to dig in the substrate, which may cause them to disturb and uproot live plants.
Water Environment
pH: 7.0, Temperature: 70-75º F, Hardness: 10 dGH - medium hard water, Water conditions: Frequent water changes are important and a heavy duty filter is needed.
Diet
Omnivorous: Will take small live foods, algae wafers, frozen or freeze dried foods, pellets, Cichlid flakes
Reproduction
Egglayer: Firemouth Cichlids may lay 500 eggs or more. The eggs/fry will be cared for by both parents and are protected in pits. These fish are very good parents and will vigilantly guard their brood.
Plant Compatibility
Sparse vegetation along the rear portion of the aquarium and along the sides; however, use only strong, hardy species in this aquarium. Be aware that this Cichlid burrows! You may want to try artificial plants instead or anchor your live plants.
Tips
This Cichlid is very hardy and easy to keep and makes the perfect beginner's Cichlid. This fish is not a picky eater. A large aquarium with frequent water changes is necessary in order to keep this fish healthy and happy.
